Did anyone else sign off their high school yearbooks this way? I also used to write, “Stay fresh. Be cool. Drink Pepsi,” and drew a cat next to it. I thought it was really cool at the time.

I feel like I’m signing off on y’alls yearbooks for a very different kind of summer break. After today I’m deleting this app from my phone for at least two months. 😱

It’s getting real! This is the last preggo photo you'll see of me in the feed. I’m going on leave after Friday! Eek! 😬

In my last post I talked about the importance of letting things go. My clients will be okay without me. And they totally will. Powering through for the sake of others doesn’t help anyone.
✧
But I also made a commitment to myself when I found out I was pregnant: I wouldn’t let pregnancy be an excuse to quit or be lazy.
✧
I really wanted to go on a hike last weekend, but I was afraid I’d be too sore, tired, and wobbly to make it. I decided I would make the hour drive to the hiking spot anyway and just see how far I got.
✧
I hiked slowly, wore a dress and flip-flops because everything else was too tight, and didn't make it as far as I typically would. And that’s all well and good. But I did it.
✧
The biggest piece of advice I’ve received from mom friends is to be flexible. Things are always changing, but change is not an excuse to give up on our values. Isn’t flexibility what we teach our clients? It seems to be the key to success in many arenas, including private practice.

This is what I’ve been telling myself as I get ready to go on leave in less than a week.

Since I started private practice in 2012, I’ve never fully unplugged from my clients for more than 2 weeks at a time. And even then I've still been accessible via email.
✧
This time, I’m fully signing out of access to client calls and emails for at least 2 months.
✧
In grad school I was taught that as therapists we should prioritize client care at our own expense. I remember one professor telling the class that he saw eight clients on the same day that he received news his mom passed away - he seemed to think this was what we all should do in this situation.
✧
I’m calling BS! We can’t care for others if we don’t prioritize our own care. And guess what? Our clients will be okay without us.
✧
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve gone above and beyond to set my clients up for success. I made referrals where needed and gave out a list of therapists’ names who have made themselves available to my clients while I’m gone. I have autoresponders with all this info set up in my voicemail and email, including who to contact in case of crisis.
✧
But ultimately, I need to have full permission to go on leave. I imagine it’ll feel rather bizarre at first because it’s so counter to what I was taught, but I know it’s what’s best for me and my family. I hope you feel permission to unplug when you need to also. There’s a community of fellow therapists and resources available to support you and your clients when needed!

I used to frown on the idea of slowing down - whether it be due to sickness, mental health, or now the upcoming arrival of a baby. I thought I was supposed to power through so I could be there for my clients.
✧
I cancelled a number of sessions early on in pregnancy due to morning sickness. One time I cancelled just 30 minutes before session. One time I even stopped mid-session and didn’t charge the client for the session.
✧
There’s nothing like pregnancy to physically force us to slow down.
✧
A couple of months ago I realized that if I wanted to launch my e-course before baby arrives, I would need to speed up my efforts. Meanwhile, my body continued to slow down.
✧
There was a moment when I genuinely considered powering through. I thought I *had* to make this e-course happen no matter what. Instead, I made the conscious decision to let the timeline go. It’s still in the works, but it won’t launch until after I’m back from leave.
✧
Whatever your circumstances in life, I hope you feel permission to slow down when you need it. I know for me, releasing the timeline for my e-course has allowed me to enjoy the time I have before baby and also to be a better therapist!
